About Off-Grid Field Guide

Off-Grid Field Guide exists to help beginners get off-grid power right the first time, without wasting money on parts that do not fit together or following advice written for engineers.

Why we started this

Most off-grid information is written either for people who already know the jargon or for people trying to sell you one specific product. When you are brand new, that is a rough place to be. You end up with a battery that is too small, an inverter that buzzes, and a controller that does not match your panels.

We wanted a site that talks to you like a knowledgeable friend would. Plain English, complete builds you can copy, and honest opinions about what is worth buying. No degree required, and no pressure to spend more than you need.

What we do

We turn off-grid power into something you can actually act on. That means full parts lists for vans, RVs, and cabins, beginner guides that answer the real questions, head-to-head comparisons, and free tools that size your system for you. If a page does not help you make a decision, it does not belong here.

Independent and reader-supported

We are independent. We are not owned by a solar brand, and nobody pays us to recommend their gear. The site is reader-supported through affiliate links, which means we may earn a small commission when you buy through us, at no extra cost to you. That keeps the lights on and lets us stay honest about what to skip. You can read the full details on our affiliate disclosure page.

Who writes it

Sam started out clueless about off-grid power and made the expensive mistakes so you don't have to. After wiring a campervan and a small cabin, Sam now explains solar, batteries, and backup power in plain English for beginners.
