Propane Refrigerator or 12V Fridge for an Off-Grid Cabin?
Updated October 14, 2026 · Product availability last verified October 14, 2026
With any solar, a 12V compressor fridge is the better cabin fridge: about 290 to 545 watt-hours a day by the makers' figures, which 100 to 200 watts of panel covers. A propane fridge makes sense with no solar or heavy shade, if the cabin stays between about 65 and 90°F while it runs and nobody sleeps in the same room. If propane is right for you, the Unique UGP-10C is the documented, CSA-marked model to look at first.
- Plan on: about 1.4 to 1.8 lb of propane a day for a 10 to 14 cubic foot fridge by Unique's figures, two to three 20 lb tanks a month.
- Cold cabin: at 60°F or below, a propane fridge can freeze its food (Unique).
- Safety: licensed gas fitter, CO alarm, and never in a room where people sleep.
A propane fridge sounds like the obvious off-grid answer: no batteries, no panels, a full-size upright that runs on a tank. It is the right answer for some cabins and a costly mistake for others. Here is how much propane one really burns, how it compares with a 12V fridge on solar, the temperature and safety limits that decide it, and the one propane model we would start with.

Side by side
Propane vs 12V: how they compare
| Propane (absorption) | 12V compressor | |
|---|---|---|
| Energy per day | About 1.4 to 1.8 lb of propane for a 10 to 14 cu ft upright (Unique) | About 290 to 545 Wh for a 20 to 60 L chest fridge |
| Running cost | About 2.1 to 2.7 full 20 lb tanks a month | About 100 to 200W of solar, then nothing |
| Room temperature | Best at 65 to 90°F; can freeze food at 60°F or below (Unique) | Varies by model; Dometic lists 61 to 109°F for the CFX5 |
| Level | Must be level side to side and front to back | Small tilt is fine; BougeRV allows 5° for long running |
| Combustion in the room | Yes on free-standing models: CO alarm, ventilation, never where people sleep | None |
| Install | Licensed gas fitter, regulator, leak test | A fused 12V circuit |
| Sizes | Full-size uprights, about 2 to 19 cu ft | Mostly chest-style; DC uprights from specialist makers |

How much propane a propane fridge uses
Unique rates its 10 and 14 cubic foot cabin fridges at about 1.4 and 1.8 lb of propane a day, and its small 3-way at about 0.7. A full 20 lb tank holds 20 lb and a Blue Rhino exchange tank holds 15, so here is what that means for refills, using 4.2 lb per gallon from the propane industry's technical guide.
| Fridge | Propane a day | A month | Days per 20 lb tank | Days per 15 lb exchange |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unique UGP-3, 3 cu ft 3-way | About 0.7 lb | 21 lb, about 1 tank | About 28 | About 21 |
| About 1.4 lb | 42 lb, 2.1 tanks | About 14 | About 11 | |
| Full-size, 14 cu ft (Unique UGP-14) | About 1.8 lb | 54 lb, 2.7 tanks | About 11 | About 8 |
Math on maker figures for a 30-day month, not measurements. At EIA's average residential bulk price of about $2.40 to $2.70 a gallon in 2025 and 2026, the UGP-10C's 10 gallons a month is about $25; cylinder refills usually cost more per gallon. Hot rooms and door opening raise the burn.
If propane is right
The propane fridge we would look at first
Unique UGP-10C Classic Retro Propane Refrigerator
Capacity: 9.7 cu ft (7.6 fridge, 2.1 freezer)Propane: About 1.4 lb a day (Unique)Also runs on: 110V AC, 300W
Verdict: The Unique UGP-10C is the propane fridge we would look at first for a cabin: the only full-size model in stock on Amazon with a published spec sheet, owner's manual and CSA mark. Unique rates it at about 1.4 lb of propane a day, roughly two 20 lb tanks a month, for 9.7 cubic feet in a 23.5 inch wide cabinet.
Unique is the cabin specialist in this category, and its paperwork is the reason this is the pick. The spec sheet gives 9.7 cubic feet split 7.6 fridge and 2.1 freezer, a burner that runs between 600 and 1,600 BTU an hour, battery ignition, a thermostat with flame-out gas shutoff, and about 1.4 lb of propane in 24 hours; it also runs on 110 volts at 300 watts as a backup. At 23.5 inches wide it fits a 24 inch opening, but it needs 6 inches above, 2 at the sides and 1 behind to combustibles, and it must not sit on carpet. Unique requires a licensed gas fitter, warrants parts for a year and the cooling coil for three, and covers no labor. Two buying notes: the Amazon title calls it 14 cubic feet, but Unique's sheet says 9.7, and it is sold by a third-party seller, so confirm the model suffix, warranty handling and freight delivery before you order. The standard (SM) version ships without Unique's built-in CO device, so add a separate CO alarm.
What we like
- Published spec sheet, manual and CSA mark
- About 1.4 lb of propane a day for 9.7 cu ft
- Thermostat with flame-out gas shutoff
Worth knowing
- Needs a licensed gas fitter and a level floor
- Burns propane in the room: never where people sleep
- Premium price from a third-party seller
What about the cheaper imports? SMETA and Smad sell propane fridges on Amazon for less, from 3.5 cubic foot 3-way units to 14 cubic foot uprights, and their listings give fuel figures. We found no manual, certification mark or venting instructions published for any of them, and some fuel claims look low next to Unique's figures for the same cabinet size. For a gas appliance burning inside a cabin, that missing paperwork is the paperwork an inspector or insurer will ask for, so we do not recommend them for indoor use.

The 12V route
If the cabin has solar, or will, a 12V compressor fridge does the same job with no flame and no fuel runs. Our 12V fridge guide covers the chest-style picks, from the ICECO VL45 at about 350 Wh a day to the dual-zone VL60 at about 545, and the solar and battery math to run them. For a cabin that wants an upright, Unique also makes 12/24V DC fridges, rated in its 2020 catalog at about 445 to 590 Wh a day for 3.8 to 13 cubic feet in a 77°F room, about 200 watts of panel for a 10 cubic foot model. For a big chest fridge, SunDanzer's DC160 is rated at about 150 Wh a day as a fridge in a 90°F room. Both are sold direct rather than on Amazon.
Do not plan to run a propane fridge on solar
Most propane fridges also run on 110 volts, and 3-way models add 12 volts, which makes them look like a hedge. They are not an efficient one: both electric modes use a heater in place of the flame. Unique rates the UGP-10C at 300 watts on 110 volts, and Amazon listings for 6 cubic foot imports give about 3.5 kWh a day, which would take roughly 1,100 watts of panel. A 3-way's 12 volt heater runs around 150 to 275 watts, and Dometic's manual says running on 12 volts without charging will quickly drain the battery. Treat the electric modes as grid or generator backup, and use 12 volts only while driving.
Replacing an RV fridge? Built-in RV propane fridges, like Dometic's Americana line, are certified only for RVs with their roof or sidewall vent kits installed as the manual specifies. Keep them in RVs; do not put one in a cabin.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long will a 20 lb propane tank run a propane refrigerator?
About 11 to 14 days for a 10 to 14 cubic foot cabin fridge, using Unique's figures of about 1.4 to 1.8 lb of propane a day, and about four weeks for its small 3 cubic foot 3-way. Unique's UGP-10C at about 1.4 lb a day goes about 14 days on a full 20 lb tank, or about 11 days on a 15 lb exchange tank. Hot rooms, frequent door opening and warm food going in all raise the burn, so keep a spare tank on hand. A full-time cabin is usually better served by a larger tank filled by a delivery service.
Is a propane fridge or a 12V fridge better for an off-grid cabin?
With any solar, a 12V compressor fridge is usually better. The 12V fridges we cover use about 290 to 545 watt-hours a day by their makers' figures, which 100 to 200 watts of panel covers on a day with about four hours of full sun, and after that there is nothing to buy or haul. A propane fridge makes sense with no solar or heavy shade, when you want a full-size upright without a battery bank, and only if the cabin stays between about 65 and 90°F while it runs and nobody sleeps in the same room.
Will a propane fridge work in a cold cabin?
Not well. Unique's manual says its propane fridges work best between 65 and 90°F, and that at 60°F or below overnight the fridge section can freeze food even on the lowest setting. That makes a propane fridge a poor match for an unheated winter cabin. If the cabin is heated whenever it is occupied, it works; if not, plan on shutting it down for the season.
Is a propane refrigerator safe to use indoors?
Only when it is installed and used as its maker requires. Unique's manual calls its free-standing models unvented appliances that use room air and release combustion products into the space, and the CPSC says never to run an unvented fuel-burning appliance in a room where people sleep. Have a licensed gas fitter install it, leak-test connections with soapy water rather than a flame, keep the flue clean, and put a UL 2034 carbon monoxide alarm on that level. In a one-room cabin, a 12V fridge avoids the problem.
How does a propane refrigerator work?
It is an absorption fridge: a small propane flame heats a sealed system of ammonia, hydrogen and water, and that heat drives the cooling cycle instead of a compressor. That is why it makes no running noise and needs no electricity on gas. It is also why it must be level, because if the unit is tilted the fluid pools and cooling slows or stops, which Unique's warranty does not cover.
Can I run a propane fridge on solar instead?
Not efficiently. Its 110 volt mode uses an electric heater in place of the flame: Unique rates the UGP-10C at 300 watts, and listings for 6 cubic foot imports give about 3.5 kWh a day, which would take roughly 1,100 watts of solar. The 12 volt mode on 3-way fridges is a heater too, around 150 to 275 watts, and Dometic says running on 12 volts without charging will quickly drain the battery. If you have solar, a 12V compressor fridge is the efficient choice.
